• I want to be a substitute teacher. What do I do?
The requirements for a Temporary Instructor are acceptable references and 60 or more credits from an accredited college or university with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
In addition, Temporary Instructors must complete a training program offered by Miami-Dade College. This training is required for applicants who have not previously received training in school safety and security procedures, educational liability laws, professional responsibilities, ethics, classroom management and instructional strategies.

To obtain eligibility in a subject other than your degree area it will be necessary to take and pass a Subject Area Exam. Information and registration for the exam may be obtained via the following website: www.cefe.usf.edu.

• l already hold a certificate from another state. Does Florida have reciprocity with other states?
Yes, Florida does have reciprocity. Just be sure to send a photocopy of your certificate to the Florida Department of Education, along with your application, fee, and official transcript (s). The following must apply:
- The certificate must be a standard certificate and valid at the time of application for the Florida certificate.
- The certificate must be issued in a subject(s) in which Florida offers certification.
- Certificates are acceptable from all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Educational Authority (DODEA, formerly DODDS)

• What is the cost of drug testing and when do I have to take the drug test?
There is no cost associated with the drug test. The drug test will be administered once a school has begun the hiring process. Failure to comply with the expiration date requirement will result in disqualification of employment eligibility or any further consideration for employment by Miami-Dade County Public Schools for a three year period.

• What is the cost of fingerprinting and when do I have to have my fingerprints taken?
Payment for fingerprinting is as follows:
Effective July 1, 2007
No personal Checks will be accepted
All applicants must present a current official picture identification such as a driver's
license, passport, or State of Florida identification card AND a valid social security card.
Office Hours: Mondays - Thursdays 7:00am - 6:30pm
Fridays 7:00am - 4:00pm
